Essential maintenance work is being carried out on Abbotsford Bridge over the Murray River to provide a safer road surface for all road users.
What is Transport for NSW doing?
Transport for NSW will carry out essential night work on Abbotsford Bridge to re-sheet the bridge deck. The bridge will be closed for night work from Monday to Thursday over an eight-week period for the safety of workers and road users.
This work is the first stage of a maintenance program that will improve road safety and reduce future maintenance costs. The second stage of work will start in July 2020.
During the night closures, traffic will be detoured via the George Chaffey Bridge at Mildura.
Night work will be carried out from 11pm to 6am between 16 March and 8 May 2020, weather permitting. Emergency vehicles will be able to cross the bridge at all times, however, all other traffic will be detoured via the George Chaffey Bridge, which will add about 40 minutes to a journey.
What you need to know
Work involves re-sheeting the bridge and some electrical work in preparation for further works in the second part of this year. The second stage of work will include rehabilitating the bridge stress-laminated deck and upgrading the structure’s mechanical components.
The work will involve the use of machinery which generates some noise. We will make every effort to minimise noise by arranging the work in stages at different locations and turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use. Although the bridge will be open to traffic during the day, there will be some temporary traffic changes and minor delays to ensure the work zone is safe.
Traffic barriers and reduced speed limits will be in place and may affect travel times. Motorists are advised to allow up to five minutes extra travel time to their journey while the work is under way.
