During 2019, Department of Transport and Main Roads and Brisbane City Council developed the Port of Brisbane Declared Freight Precinct which allows additional heavy vehicle mass and dimension exemptions for the movement of freight travelling between the Port of Brisbane and key adjacent customer destinations.
The precinct covers all roads in the Lytton, Hemmant and Murarrie areas, east of the Gateway Motorway.
Transport operators can apply for a route specific Class 3 permit through the NHVR Portal to access the additional mass and dimension exemptions for the Port of Brisbane Declared Freight Precinct outlined below:
PBS level 2 vehicles above 85 tonnes
- Maximum 30m length
- Regulation axle masses
- PBS level 2 standards of gradeability and pavement horizontal loading are exempt.
Note: PBS standard exemptions only apply to PBS approved vehicles operating under a permit within this Declared Freight Precinct. All PBS standards must be met for any travel on roads outside of a Declared Freight Precinct.
Flat rack and open top freight containers
- You may carry multiple items
- Maximum 78.5 tonnes GCM
- You may use low loader and low loader/dolly combinations
- Open top containers must have a minimum of 6 meters clear space between the centre line of the rearmost axle of the towing unit or dolly and the foremost axle of the combination’s rear axle group
- Operators must check the Conditions of Operation Database before travelling
Dimension allowances
Operators must comply with all requirements under the Multi-State Class 1 Load Carrying Vehicles Dimension Exemption Notice 2020 (No. 1).
- You may carry multiple items
- Maximum of one (1) container per move
- Item/s must be carried in a way to minimise dimensions
- A secondary item must not increase a dimension that already exceeds regulation
- A secondary item must not exceed the length of the flat rack
- Maximum 4.5m width
- Maximum 35m length
- Maximum 5m height
- If height exceeds 4.6m high, the load must be transported on a trailer with a maximum deck height of 1.2m
- If a container exceeds 4.3m high and exceeds regulation mass, the load must be transported on a trailer with a maximum deck height of 1.2m
- Operators must check the Conditions of Operation Database before travelling
