Regulators need to get the ball rolling

NatRoad fully supports the move to Euro VI and has called on the Federal Government to incentivize its adoption. The more immediate need, however, is for reforms to Australian Design Rules to accelerate the take up of zero emission trucks.

Top of the list is aligning width rules with international markets and implementing a one-tonne mass concession for Euro VI and electric and zero emission vehicles.

Australia’s 2.5-metre truck width rule is out of step with other countries and changing it will deliver benefits for load restraint and work health and safety.

Refrigerated vehicles will be more efficient, trucks will have better roll stability and we will have access to the latest international technology.

Government needs to send a clear message to industry that the reduced payload from new lower emissions vehicles can be partly compensated for with technical changes.
