The Victorian Department of Transport has advised of an extension of the Ministerial Order suspending the application of truck curfew and loading zone signs for heavy vehicles transporting food and personal hygiene products.
The original order was issued for six months and expired on 21 September 2020. The extension expires on 31 December 2020.
The Ministerial Order (issued under the Road Safety Act 1986) allows the delivery of food items or personal hygiene products at any time of the day to premises where the public may purchase those goods.
NatRoad has communicated to the Victorian government that the favourable effects of the issue of the Ministerial Order brings into stark contrast the inefficiencies and unfairness of the curfews which have been imposed across Melbourne and in some of Victoria’s regions.
We submitted that the efficiencies that have been introduced during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic should be made permanent and the opportunity taken to analyse and re-frame the curfew system so that a more rational policy basis emerges.
