The presentation provides an overview of recent work of the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) to improve the quality of existing transport data collections and develop new data collections that can help inform government, industry and the broader community. Featured topics will include: BITRE’s national heavy vehicle road crash and road fatality data collections, BITRE’s replacement of the ABS’ discontinued Motor Vehicle census, BITRE’s national freight forecasts and modal choice and modal efficiencies, and joint BITRE/National Freight Data Hub team efforts to make more detailed Australian import and export data available and provide more information about Australian rail industry freight data.

Presented by:
David Mitchell – David is Director, Transport Research and Modelling Section, BITRE, which provides economic analysis, research and statistics on infrastructure and transport to inform both Australian Government policy development and wider community understanding. David’s responsibilities include development of the replacement motor vehicle census collection and development and production of freight and passenger forecasts.

Peter Johnston – Peter is Assistant Director, Road Safety Data & Analysis Section, BITRE. The section collects and publishes road safety data and provides analytic briefing focussing on the National Road Safety Strategy.

Brendan Lawrence – Brendan is an analyst in the Infrastructure & Surface Transport Statistics Section, BITRE. Brendan was an author of the Australian Infrastructure and Transport Statistics yearbook last year and is currently working with the newly available customs data.

Jason Jin – Jason is an analyst in the National Freight Data Hub Section, DITRDCA, and has been leading work to improve information about Australian rail freight sector.
