Australia’s commitment is to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The Coalition has set a target of 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2030, while Labor wants to reduce emissions by 43%.
Whichever party forms the next government, there will be an impact on the transport sector. NatRoad supports a move to Euro VI as one measure to assist with emissions reduction but that move must be accompanied by concessions in relation to steer and other axle weights, width and length (to avoid payload reductions) and even purchasing incentives.
Without incentives, the cycle of renewal of new trucks will delay the roll-out of Euro VI trucks.
NatRoad’s main emissions reduction policy has been promoted for at least five years. NatRoad has called on the Government to require those claiming a fuel tax credit , once restored, to demonstrate they have a regular maintenance program in place for their trucks. Poorly maintained diesel trucks can be up to 20 times more polluting than well maintained trucks.
