Transport for NSW has trialled the effectiveness of Fresnel lenses in reducing passenger-side blind spots on heavy vehicles and it’s demonstrated they can significantly improve visibility.
A Fresnel lens is a thin, plastic lens that is affixed to the passenger side window of a heavy vehicle, providing the driver with a wider angle of view. With a quick glance through the lens, the driver can now see into their blind spot, making it easier to detect other road users who might otherwise be hidden from view.
A limited number of Fresnel lenses are currently available for NSW heavy vehicle operators to try out on their vehicles. To qualify, your truck must weigh over 12 tonnes GVM, be a 2015 model or older, and be registered in NSW and lenses will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
