The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) has announced the launch of phase two of its Get Fleet Fit initiative, designed to equip small to medium businesses and owner operators with practical tools to improve fuel efficiency, reduce costs, and extend the life of their vehicles.

The road transport industry faces increasing pressure from rising fuel prices and tightening margins. Get Fleet Fit offers a clear, actionable plan to help drive down operational costs while also reducing carbon emissions. This will help businesses meet growing customer and government expectations to deliver emissions reductions that align with Australia’s legislated net zero target.

Get Fleet Fit phase two delves into what businesses can do now to save money, work smarter and reduce wear and tear on their trucks and trailers. Phase two of Get Fleet Fit expands on the comprehensive 5-step roadmap NatRoad launched earlier this year. From selecting the right vehicles to optimising load management and incorporating smart driving systems, the program is all about practical solutions that deliver real results.

“Small to medium businesses and owner operators are under constant pressure to control costs and stay competitive. Get Fleet Fit offers ideas on how to make businesses more efficient, save money and keep fleets running longer, while reducing emissions across the industry,” NatRoad CEO, Warren Clark said.

Success Stories: Businesses who are getting results

Businesses who have been using the practical approaches outlined by Get Fleet Fit highlight the tangible benefits.

Beggs Bulk, Mildura VIC
After 16 years in the industry, Ken Beggs, owner of Beggs Bulk, achieved strong results for his long-haul bulk transport business by focusing on fuel efficiency. By ‘right-sizing’ his fleet and prioritising high-tech, fuel-efficient vehicles, Beggs Bulk was able to slash fuel costs by up to $40,000 annually. Additionally, aftermarket upgrades such as aero kits and real-time driver feedback systems helped achieve fuel economy of up to 1.9 km/L, while reducing CO2 emissions by 7.4 tonnes per year.

BC Sands, Sydney NSW
For over a decade, BC Sands has honed its operations to maximise productivity and cut costs. The introduction of an advanced order management system optimised their delivery scheduling and load management, resulting in a 10% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. By squeezing more out of every delivery and smoothing out delivery windows, BC Sands increased deliveries per driver hour by 26%, giving the company a competitive edge in a crowded market.

As phase two of Get Fleet Fit rolls out, NatRoad continues to support trucking businesses with the resources they need to manage tightening margins and stay ahead of and carbon emission expectations. The focus remains on the activities small to medium businesses and owner operators can implement today to ensure a more sustainable and profitable tomorrow.

“Get Fleet Fit is about creating a stronger, more resilient industry and making a difference to the environment. By adopting these best practices, businesses can protect their bottom line and help secure a positive future for the industry,” Mr Clark said.
