In the realm of heavy haulage, where every load presents a new challenge and every mile counts, few can rival the experience and expertise of Kev and Dave Murada from Metal Transport Industries. Based in Wollongong, NSW, this dynamic duo has earned their place as the Kenworth Legends for 2024, a title that reflects not only their decades of hard work but also their unwavering passion for the trucking industry.
A Legacy Built on Family and Grit
The Murada brothers are no strangers to the road. With a family history steeped in machinery and transport, their journey began many years ago under the watchful eyes of their father, who owned earthmoving equipment. “We started the transport company with our brother Peter, and we’ve been at it ever since,” says Kev. “I’m numb er one, and Dave’s number three,” he adds with a cheeky grin.
Their early days were spent carting scrap steel for BHP (now known as BlueScope). As they navigated the highways of Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, and Newcastle, they quickly learned the ropes of the heavy haulage business. “We were floating Dad’s machines and hiring them out to do our jobs,” Dave recalls. This adaptability and resourcefulness laid the foundation for what would become a thriving heavy haulage enterprise.
The Heavy Haulage Challenge
Today, Metal Transport Industries can legally cart loads of up to 95 tonnes. They’ve become a vital player in major projects, including work for the Snowy Hydro and wind farm developments. “One day you might be doing a tri float with a 20-tonne excavator, and the next you’re hauling an 80-tonne machine. The heavy haulage side gives you challenges,” says Kev. “And I still love the challenge.”
However, the job is not without its pressures. “In heavy haulage, what people tell you is not always an indication of what it is supposed to be,” says Kev, highlighting the unpredictable nature of their work. With narrow bridges and tight deadlines, making quick decisions is part of the job. Dave adds with a laugh, “We dodge a lot of power lines. We wouldn’t have pulled any down, of course…well.”
The Joys of the Road
With over 45 years in the business, the Murada brothers have seen it all—especially the pubs. “Kev could write a book on the pubs he’s drunk at,” Dave jokes. But amidst the laughter, there’s a sense of nostalgia as they recall the breathtaking sunsets and sunrises witnessed on their journeys across the Australian landscape.
Their work is not just about transportation; it’s a lifestyle. “The first thing you learn really quickly is how to change gears because the only way out of Wollongong is uphill,” Kev chuckles, highlighting the challenges of their local geography. They still service BlueScope, moving approximately 3,500 to 4,000 tonnes of slag daily, a testament to their commitment and resilience in an industry that demands both.
The Kenworth Connection
A significant part of their success can be attributed to their fleet of Kenworth trucks, which they proudly endorse. “The Kenworth product has proved itself over and over again,” says Dave. “It’s just the best, honestly. And it’s built here in Australia, which we love because it means Australian jobs.”
Their loyalty to Kenworth is rooted in the brand’s dedication to quality and customer satisfaction. “With Kenworth, you can customize to your heart’s content—one tank, four tanks, six tanks; you name it, they’ll work with you,” says Kev. Their relationship with Kenworth is more than just business; it’s a partnership that has endured since the company’s inception in 1979.
Legends in Their Own Right
Being named Kenworth Legends is a significant honour for the Murada brothers. “It’s a compliment, and we take it as such,” reflects Kev. They embody the spirit of the trucking industry—hardworking, resourceful, and always ready for the next challenge.
As they look ahead, retirement may not be on the horizon just yet. “Almost makes you want to retire!” Dave jokes, but Kev quickly interjects, “No, we’re not talking about that!” With their passion for heavy haulage and their dedication to the Kenworth brand, it’s clear that Kev and Dave Murada will continue to be influential figures in the industry for years to come.
In a world where the road can be unpredictable, the Murada brothers have proven that with the right attitude, a bit of humour, and a strong connection to their roots, every challenge can be met with success. Here’s to the legends of Metal Transport Industries—may the next 45 years be just as exciting!
